New ACCA members urged to make integrity a number 1 priority

ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) recently hosted a breakfast meeting in honour of forty-four affiliates who joined the ranks of ACCA membership over the period January 1, 2008 to February 1, 2009.  The meeting was held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel and was hosted by Brenda Lee Tang, Head of Corporate Development, ACCA Caribbean and Shane Kissoon, ACCA Manager Southern Caribbean.

The newly inducted ACCA members were formally welcomed to the global body for professional accountants by Ms. Lee Tang, who congratulated them, recognizing the commitment, professionalism and dedication it would have taken each of them to get to this point.  Ms. Lee Tang also reminded the members that ACCA is at core a membership body and as such, takes its role of support and service to its membership quite seriously.  She went on to emphasize that although membership brought with it many benefits it also held a great deal of responsibility.

Shane Kissoon, Manager ACCA Southern Caribbean delivered a presentation on ACCA CPD Realize in which he pointed out that “Becoming an ACCA member not only provides multiple learning opportunities but also creates excellent opportunities for members to enhance their reputation and to network.”  He added that “ACCA focuses on lifelong learning, and has entered into many partnerships worldwide to ensure that its qualification and designation remains truly global.”

Nicholas Gomez, FCCA and  Country Managing Partner of Ernst and Young Trinidad and Assurance and Advisory Business Service Line Leader of Ernst and Young Caribbean delivered a thought provoking feature address in which he challenged the newly inducted members to operate at all times within a framework of integrity.  He added, "Professionals are obliged to do the right thing irrespective of the expectations or pressures of stakeholders. The fundamentals: courage to lead, to make the right decision, integrity, energy and enthusiasm are a few of the values that underpin professionalism."

The warm welcome was well received by the new members many of whom were appreciative of the support and encouragement.
