53 Jamaicans join the ranks of ACCA fellows

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) recently held an induction ceremony in honour of fifty-three Jamaican members who attained fellowship status during the period December 2008 to May 2009.  The ceremony was held at the Courtleigh Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica and was hosted by Paula Marcelle-Irish, Manager, ACCA Northern Caribbean. Auditor General of Jamaica, Pamela Monroe-Ellis attended the event and delivered the key note address to an enthusiastic audience.  Ms. Prunella Vassell, ACCA’s International Assembly Representative and ACCA’s Approved Employers were also in attendance and witnessed the celebration of these new fellows.

In her welcome remarks, Mrs. Marcelle-Irish congratulated the new fellows on attaining such a significant landmark in their ACCA membership and urged them to seek to encourage and mentor new members and affiliates who are at the early stages of this lifelong journey.  She added, ‘Being actively involved in this way can only redound to a stronger, more dynamic and supportive body which can have great influence on the future of the profession.  Additionally, becoming a mentor will bring with it many personal benefits along with opportunities to grow and develop in the process.”

Mrs. Monroe-Ellis further developed the mentoring theme and told the fellows in her presentation that   “The most meaningful contribution we can make to our profession is first to develop a sense of pride in discharging our professional duties and lead by example through coaching and mentoring either directly or indirectly.” She continued, “We must begin to work and to live beyond our own existence.  Our toils and struggles are a small piece of the larger puzzle that we are on this earth to complete.”

The induction ceremony was well received by the new fellows many of whom were appreciative of the outpouring of support and encouragement.  They also took good advantage of the opportunity to network and interact with colleagues and fellow finance professionals.  The ACCA Caribbean Office has hosted similar events in the Caribbean which have been met with enthusiastic reception. All our ACCA members in Jamaica are our ambassadors and we will continue to engage them in ACCA activities in 2010.
